Income Tax Clinic Guidelines
Step 1: Income Guidelines
Eligibility Criteria:
In order to be eligible for the Canada Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), individuals must meet the following conditions:
Modest Income:
Income guidelines are based on family size. Here are the suggested income levels:
Family Size | Income Limit |
---|---|
1 person | $35,000 |
2 people | $45,000 |
3 people | $47,500 |
4 people | $50,000 |
5 people | $52,500 |
More than 5 people | $52,500, plus $2,500 for each additional person |
Family size includes individuals, couples, and their dependents.
Step 2: Simple Tax Situation
To qualify, individuals should have income from one or more of these sources:
- Employment
- Pension
- Benefits (e.g., CPP, OAS, disability, EI, social assistance)
- RRSPs
- Scholarships, bursaries, fellowships, or grants
- Interest (under $1,000)
The clinic does not support complex tax situations, such as:
- Self-employment income or expenses
- Business or rental income
- Interest over $1,000
- Capital gains or losses
- Bankruptcy
- Deceased persons
- Foreign property (T1135)
- Foreign income
Step 3: Service Area
You need to live within the NROCRC service area.
If you live elsewhere in the Ottawa area, you may qualify for a different income tax clinic.
To check if you live in our service area
Visit Coalition Ottawa Website- Click on "Find your CHRC" on the right
- Enter your postal code in the small search box on the left beside the arrow.
- It will show you whether or not you are in NROCRC's catchment area. If you are not, it will tell you which organization you can register with to file your tax return.
